Throughout 2024, Globalworks collected and analysed a large amount of data on Shein and Temu in order to gain insight into the accelerating ultra-fast fashion revolution. This study shows how Shein and Temu elevate exploitation to a new level. The two companies are leading a highly troubling trend towards algorithmically managed supplier relations, enabling the resurgence of a sweatshop economy in which labourers work without formal contracts and under unregulated working hours. Worsening working conditions affect all supplier tiers in China. Because of the fierce competition in the fashion industry, more brands and producers will strive to follow Shein and Temu’s lead.
